SPBC Members:

To encourage safe riding habits, reduce risks and accidents, and to improve the image of cyclists in general and the St. Petersburg Bicycle Club (SPBC) specifically, the SPBC has obtained a dozen green “Captain” arm bands. On Saturday mornings during the groups rides they’ll be worn by club members who are experienced in group riding etiquette and techniques.

Ride Captains will know the routes, will follow the “Rules-of-the Road” and demonstrate safe riding habits. They are expected to take their turn pulling – but not pull the entire ride. They will be approachable and open to discussion and feedback. They are human and thus will make mistakes. Don’t yell at them or talk negatively about them….unless you are ready to step-up and be a Ride Captain the following week!

Their focus will be to provide education; however, if you don’t want to follow their guidance, please drop out of that ride!

We will begin this experiment with the 18s and then the 20s. If successful, we will gradually move it into the higher speed groups. Please contact Steve Gronemeyer at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you would like to be a Ride Captain. We hope to have a number of Ride Captains and would not expect an individual to be a Ride Captain every week. We encourage riders from the higher speed groups to occasionally join the lower speed groups as Ride Captains in order to share their knowledge and experience.

We are still discussing some of the details of the program, but we will let experience and feedback from you (the SPBC Members) be our guide. This was only one of several suggestions the Board has received to increase the safety of the rides, but we felt that it was the best first step.

Your thoughts and feedback on all of the above are welcome.

Ride Safely,

TIM Tim Butts President SPBC
